When is the Best Time to Hike Long Point Trai In New River Gorge?
Spring and fall are considered the best times to hike Long Point Trail, thanks to the mild temperatures and beautiful seasonal foliage. Summer can be warm but is still pleasant, while winter offers a quieter, albeit colder, hiking experience. Each season brings its own unique charm to the trail. But, even more important to the season you need to consider what time of day you should hike Long Point Trial. The trail can get busy, especially on weekends and holidays, but early morning or weekdays tend to be quieter. But, the hike does have uneven terrain with rocks and roots and you may find it difficult for those with balance issues. What Gear Should I Bring to Hike Long Point Trail in New River Gorge National Park?
This is a relatively short trail so essentials include water, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and possibly bug spray. If you're hiking in the cooler months, warm layers are recommended. When hiking the Long Point Trail, don’t forget to bring a camera to capture the stunning views and a map or trail guide for navigation. But a first aid kit is always recommended on any hike as we’ve needed a band-aid or more next to the car or 5 miles away. If you want to gear up more take trekking poles to give you more stability and carry a hiking day pack for your water, first aid, snacks and other essentials.

Where is Long Point Trail in New River Gorge National Park?
The Long Point Trailhead is located in a residential area South of Fayetteville, West Virginia. From the Canyon Rim Visitor Center it is only 11 minutes away. Travel along US 19 over the New River Gorge Bridge to Fayetteville and turn left Court Street. Then turn on Gatewood Rd and finally turn left onto Newton Road County Rte 9-8 to finish the 5 mile drive. On Newton Rd you’ll take the first left into the trailhead.

Is there Parking at Long Point Trail New River Gorge National Park?
Yes, there is a parking lot available at the trailhead for Long Point Trail. However, it can fill up quickly with only about 40 spots, especially on weekends and holidays. As you can see by our experience, arriving early in the day or visiting during the week can help increase your chances. The parking area is well-maintained, but be prepared for a short walk to the trailhead if the lot is full. Overflow parking is available in nearby areas if needed. There is one pit toilet in the parking lot and bear proof garbage cans are available for your use.

What is There to do After Your Hike on Long Point Trail?
Near Fayetteville West Virginia there is a lot to offer after your hike to view New River Gorge. We found Don Rizo was a great place to relax and refuel after a long day. This mexican restaurant uses as much fresh ingredients as possible to carry on the family tradition of their parents including their locally famous cactus. If beer is more your style check out Freefolk Brewery or the Brew Garden. But, if you just want to discover something new head to the intersection of Maple and Court St to walk along the businesses in the downtown district.
What is the Best Trail to see the New River Gorge Bridge?
At the trail's end, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the New River Gorge Bridge and the expansive canyon below unless you get there in the fog. But, the viewpoint offers one of the most iconic and panoramic vistas in the park, making it a highlight of the hike if you can stomach the narrow walk along the rocks. You can see the winding New River as it flows through the gorge, framed by the rugged landscape. Based on other peoples photos the sight is particularly stunning during sunrise or sunset, adding a golden glow to the dramatic scenery.
