We’ll discuss what gear to bring later but let’s answer the first question while hiking Endless Wall Trail.
When is the Best Time to Visit New River Gorge National Park?
New River Gorge located in West Virginia is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. Fall is arguably the most stunning season, with vibrant foliage painting the gorge in shades of red, orange, and yellow. Spring is perfect for seeing wildflowers and enjoying mild temperatures. Summer is ideal for rafting and water activities, but it can also be crowded and humid. But we enjoyed summer days like this overcast cooler weather. Winter, while quieter, can be cold and icy, though it offers solitude and unique views of the landscape. No matter when you visit, dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly.
Where Should you Stay when Visiting New River Gorge National Park
Your lodging options range from rustic to luxurious. If you enjoy camping, the park offers several campgrounds, including some that are first-come, first-served. Keep in mind that campgrounds fill up fast during peak seasons, so book ahead if reservations are available. For more comfort, consider staying in nearby towns like Fayetteville or Beckley, which offer a mix of cozy Airbnbs, charming inns, and budget-friendly motels. Fayetteville, in particular, has a laid-back vibe and is close to many of the park’s main attractions, making it a great base for your trip. But if you are looking for a rustic resort feel our stay at Adventures on the Gorge was special. We stayed in the rv section of the resort with a full hookup pull through site. But they also have cottages for rent and tent sites available. On the property you’ll find disc golf, ropes course, swimming pool, hiking trails, restaurants, coffee and gift shops. They also support rafting and other adventures in new river gorge which leads us to the next question.
Can I go Rafting in New River Gorge National Park?
Rafting in New River Gorge National Park is an unforgettable adventure that combines breathtaking scenery, thrilling rapids, and opportunities to connect with nature. The river offers two distinct experiences: the calmer Upper New River, with gentle Class I-III rapids perfect for families and first-time rafters, and the more challenging Lower New River, featuring Class III-V rapids for those seeking adrenaline-pumping excitement. As you navigate the water, you'll be surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs, lush forests, but the only way to see the iconic New River Gorge Bridge from below is to raft the lower section. Guided trips, offered by outfitters such as Adventures on the Gorge or ACE Adventure Resort, cater to all skill levels, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. We stayed at Adventures on the Gorge, but decided to raft with ACE Adventure Resort. Talk with both companies and you can’t go wrong. But if you are rafting this season or next make sure you stay until the end of this video for an important tip. Rafting the New River Gorge is a perfect blend of natural wonder and adventure, making it a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts. But to experience all New River Gorge has to offer you must see the Gorge from Above and Below.
So, while we hike Long Point Trail let’s move on to the next question
What Are The Best Hikes in New River Gorge National Park
There’s no shortage of activities in New River Gorge, but if you’re short on time, prioritize the highlights. Hiking is a must, with trails like the Long Point Trail offering incredible views of the gorge and the iconic New River Gorge Bridge. For another unforgettable hike, try the Endless Wall Trail, known for its stunning cliffside vistas. Both hikes provide panoramic views of the new river gorge and if you plan well you can see rafters braving the lower new river. These hikes are easy to moderate but can be scary for those with a fear of heights or parents with little ones who like to wander. Check out our video description for more details on these two can’t miss hikes.

How can I Stay Safe in New River Gorge National Park?
Safety is key when exploring New River Gorge. The terrain can be rugged, with steep cliffs and uneven trails, so wear proper hiking boots and stay aware of your surroundings. Always bring plenty of water, especially on longer hikes, as dehydration can sneak up on you. Cell service is limited, so carry a physical trail map or download offline maps ahead of time. For extra safety, let someone know your plans before heading out, and avoid getting too close to cliff edges for that perfect selfie. These are common hiking tips but here make sure you check the weather before you hike. Storms can pop up causing slippery trail conditions and lightning. But in the late Fall to early Spring the trails can become icy. Winter weather can make the cliff edges deadly. If there is snow expect the rock ledges to be icy and any mistake can send you over the edge to serious injury and death. Always hike with a first aid kit and especially in New River Gorge bring a rescue rope. But you also need to consider safety while rafting. One of the main things people might forget is prescription medication especially epi-pens and insulin. Rafting trips can last all day and any medical emergency can occur. Even though guides are trained in first aid and have kits in their raft it’s essential for you to bring your personal prescriptions if you can’t live a day without them. Even over the counter medication like Benadryl, sunscreen, and lip balm are worth bringing along and the guides have packs on the raft to keep them safe and protected during your trip. If you are planning your trip today we have a very important tip coming up but let’s stay on stuff to bring with the next question while we go back to Endless Wall Trail.
What Gear Should I Pack For Hiking and Rafting New River Gorge National Park
Packing the right gear can make or break your trip. Since the weather can be unpredictable, dress in layers to stay comfortable. Bring insect repellent, especially in the warmer months, as mosquitos can be brutal on trails and while rafting. We left the rafts for lunch and the spot on the shore was a great place for insects to proliferate. Snacks and water are essential for hikes, as many trails are remote with no amenities nearby. A lightweight backpack is perfect for carrying these items, along with binoculars for spotting birds and wildlife or a camera to capture the stunning scenery. But, if you have stability problems consider bringing trekking poles. Sunglasses are a must on the water and make sure you bring an athletic strap so you don’t lose them in the water. A compass and trail maps will keep you in control of your day and help guide you as trails can intersect and as they meander through the forest. Also, if you are hiking in the afternoon or early evening make sure you bring a flashlight.

Do you Need reservations for New River Gorge National Park?
If you’re planning to go rafting, climbing, or camping, make your reservations as early as possible. Guided rafting trips are a popular way to experience the New River, and they often book out months in advance during peak season. The same goes for rock climbing tours, which are a great option if you’re new to the sport but want to try it in one of the world’s top climbing destinations. Campsites also fill up quickly, so secure your spot as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. There are not many RV parks near New River Gorge so if you are bringing a trailer or motorhome you need to plan ahead. But, to be clear Adventures on the Gorge, maybe the largest adventure resort in the region only has 15 RV sites for reservation. Also reach out to resorts or activity centers to determine whether you need to reserve times for paintball, zip lining, obstacle courses, paddle boarding and kayaking. But don’t forget you can also reserve an adventure like no other walking under Highway 19 on the New River Gorge Bridge catwalk.

A visit to the Canyon Rim or Sandstone Visitor Centers is a great way to start your trip. These centers have knowledgeable rangers who can provide up-to-date information on trail conditions, weather, and wildlife sightings. You can also pick up maps, brochures, and tips for exploring the park safely and efficiently.
